The urinary system or renal system is the organ system that produces, stores, and eliminates urine. In humans it includes two kidneys, two ureters, the bladder and the urethra. The female and male urinary system are very similar, they differ only in the length of the urethra.
Urine stasis is a stoppage or diminution of flow. Urine stasis may be caused by abnormalities in structure or innervation (control) of the urinary outflow tract that result in incomplete emptying of the bladder or pooling of urine in a diverticula (pouch or sac). An extremely important factor in the development of UTI is urinary stasis. This happens when there is a difficulty emptying the bladder, and if urine accumulates for a long time. This favors the proliferation of bacteria in the urine, leading to the development of infection.
