Lycopene uses and side effect

Indication

Heart disease, "hardening of the arteries" (atherosclerosis); and cancer of the prostate, breast, lung, bladder, ovaries, colon, and pancreas. Lycopene is also used for treating human papilloma virus (HPV) infection, which is a major cause of uterine cancer. Some people also use lycopene for cataracts and asthma.

Contra Indication

Avoid with hypersensitivity to lycopene or to any of its food sources, especially tomatoes. Tomato-based products are acidic and may irritate stomach ulcers.

Side Effect

It may also cause anorexia, chest pain, diarrhea, fat buildup under the skin, feeling of pressure in stomach, gassiness, heart attack, indigestion, nausea, skin discoloration, stomach pain, stomach ulcer irritation, vomiting, and worsened hot flashes.

Lycopene is a member of the carotenoid family. It has received much attention because studies have shown that it has a protective effect against prostate and other cancers. Studies have also shown that lycopene enhances immune function and protects against heart disease.
