An allergy refers to an exaggerated reaction by our immune system in response to bodily contact with certain foreign substances. When an allergen comes in contact with the body, it causes the immune system to develop an allergic reaction in persons who are allergic to it. Allergic reactions occur when a person's immune system reacts to normally harmless substances in the environment. A substance that causes a reaction is called an allergen.
Immunosuppressive drugs or immunosuppressive agents are drugs that inhibit or prevent activity of the immune system. They are used in immunosuppressive therapy to:
1. Prevent the rejection of transplanted organs and tissues (e.g., bone marrow, heart, kidney, liver)
2. Treat autoimmune diseases or diseases that are most likely of autoimmune origin (e.g., rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, myasthenia gravis, systemic lupus erythematosus, sarcoidosis, focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, Crohn's disease, Behcet's Disease, pemphigus, and ulcerative colitis).
3. Treat some other non-autoimmune inflammatory diseases (e.g., long term allergic asthma control)."
