Throat

The throat (Latin gula) is the anterior part of the neck, in front of the vertebral column. It consists of the pharynx and larynx. An important feature of the throat is the epiglottis, a flap which separates the esophagus from the trachea and prevents inhalation of food or drink. The throat contains various blood vessels, various pharyngeal muscles, the trachea (windpipe) and the esophagus.

Tonsillitis

Tonsillitis is an infection of the tonsils that causes them to become swollen and painful. The tonsils are the fleshy pads – actually lymph nodes – on either side of the back of the throat. The tonsils normally act as a filter for any viruses or bacteria that enter the body through the nose or mouth. Tonsillitis can occur when the tonsils become so overwhelmed by bacterial or viral infection that they swell and become inflammed.
