Throat

The throat (Latin gula) is the anterior part of the neck, in front of the vertebral column. It consists of the pharynx and larynx. An important feature of the throat is the epiglottis, a flap which separates the esophagus from the trachea and prevents inhalation of food or drink. The throat contains various blood vessels, various pharyngeal muscles, the trachea (windpipe) and the esophagus.

Pharyngitis

Pharyngitis is a sore throat caused by inflammation of the back of the throat. Your throat may be scratchy and swallowing can be painful. Usually a sore throat is the sign of another illness, such as a cold or the flu. It is one of the most common reasons for visits to family physicians. Unless you have a bacterial infection like strep throat, taking antibiotics doesn't help a sore throat. In fact, most sore throats go away in a week or less.
